Categories
Categories organize your marketplace's listings into groups. Every new site comes with 9 default categories, and you can fully customize them from the admin panel. Categories support two levels: a top-level category can hold its own subcategories.
Default categories
When you create a new site, Yclas Neo automatically seeds these 9 categories:
- For Sale
- Vehicles
- Real Estate
- Jobs
- Services
- Electronics
- Home & Garden
- Sports & Leisure
- Other
Each category is assigned a sort order that controls how they appear on your storefront. You can change the order at any time.
Two-level categories and subcategories
A category can be top level or a subcategory of another category. This lets you build a hierarchy like Vehicles → Cars, Vehicles → Motorcycles, or Real Estate → Apartments.
Two levels deep
Categories support a single level of nesting: a top-level category and one level of subcategories beneath it. Subcategories can't have their own subcategories.
How subcategories affect browsing
When a visitor browses by a parent category on your storefront, they see listings from all of its subcategories at once. Browsing by a subcategory shows only that subcategory's listings. This means you can organize listings finely without making visitors drill down just to see everything available.
How subcategories affect custom fields
A custom listing field limited to a parent category automatically applies to that category's subcategories too — so you configure it once instead of repeating it for every subcategory. See Listing fields for details.
Managing categories
Accessing category management
- Go to Sites in the admin panel
- Click on your site to open its Home page
- In the sidebar, under Build, click Categories
You can also reach categories from the Home page's "Complete the marketplace setup" steps.
Creating a category
Click the Add category button and enter a name. Use the Parent dropdown to choose where it goes:
- Top level — the category appears as a main category on your storefront
- Pick an existing category — the new category becomes a subcategory of it
The category is added to the bottom of its level. A slug is automatically generated from the name — this is used in URLs on your storefront.
Editing a category
Click the ellipsis (…) button next to a category and select Edit to rename it. When you save, the slug is automatically updated to match the new name.
Deleting a category
Click the ellipsis (…) button next to a category and select Delete to remove it. You'll be asked to confirm before the category is deleted.
Deleting affects listings and subcategories
When you delete a category, any listings assigned to it will lose their category — the listings themselves are not deleted, but they will appear without a category on your storefront. If you delete a parent category, its subcategories are promoted to the top level rather than removed.
Reordering categories
Drag a category by its grip handle (the icon on the left) to reorder it. You can reorder within each level independently — top-level categories sort among themselves, and subcategories sort within their parent. The sort order determines how categories appear in the filter navigation on your storefront.
How categories appear on your storefront
Categories are visible to your marketplace users in a few places:
- Category filter — A nested list on the listings page that lets users browse by category, with subcategories grouped under their parent
- Listing badges — Each listing displays its category as a badge on listing cards and detail pages
- Listing form — When a user creates a listing, they pick a category from a hierarchical selector that shows top-level categories and their subcategories
When a user creates a listing, they can select a category (or subcategory) populated with your active categories.
