Search & filtering

Your marketplace includes built-in search, filtering, and sorting so users can quickly find what they're looking for. The listing browse page features a dedicated filter sidebar on desktop and a slide-in flyout on mobile.

A search box is available in two places:

  • Storefront header — on desktop, and at the top of the mobile sidebar — so visitors can start searching from any page
  • Filter sidebar — a search box at the top of the browse page filters

Typing in either box sends visitors to the browse page with results ready.

How search works

By default, the search looks through listing titles and descriptions for matching keywords. You can also include the values of Single line text and Long text custom fields in keyword search — see Listing fields. Results update automatically as the user types, with a small delay to avoid too many searches while typing.

Search tips

  • Search is not case-sensitive — "bicycle" and "Bicycle" return the same results
  • The search matches partial words — searching for "bike" will find "bicycle" and "motorbike"
  • Multiple words are treated as an AND search — "red bicycle" finds listings containing both "red" and "bicycle"

Category filter

The category filter lets users browse listings by category. When enabled, it appears as a list in the filter sidebar — users click a category to narrow results to it, and "All categories" to reset.

The categories shown are the ones you've configured for your marketplace. See Categories to manage them.

Combining filters

Users can combine keyword search with category and price filtering. For example, a user could select "Vehicles", narrow the price range, and type "Honda" — showing only Vehicles listings in that price range containing "Honda".

Price range

When the price filter is enabled, a price slider appears in the filter sidebar. Users drag the slider handles to narrow results to a price band. The slider is bounded by the minimum and maximum prices you set, and prices display in your marketplace's configured currency.

Custom field filters

In addition to the default filters, any searchable custom field with a storefront filter placement appears in the filter sidebar. The control adapts to the field type:

  • Select fields render as a clickable list
  • Select multiple fields render as checkboxes
  • Number fields render as a range slider

Filters are placed as primary (before the default filters) or secondary (after them), depending on how each field is configured. You control this per field — see Listing fields → Search settings.

Sorting

A sort menu lets users order the browse results. The available options come from two places: the Search options page (newest, oldest, lowest price, highest price) and any Number custom fields you've turned into sort options.

OptionWhat it does
NewestMost recently created listings first
OldestLongest-standing listings first
Lowest priceListings ordered by price, ascending
Highest priceListings ordered by price, descending
Custom field sortsOrder by a Number field, low-to-high or high-to-low (as configured)

The first enabled sort option is the default order visitors see when they open the browse page. If no sort options are enabled, listings default to newest first.

Clearing filters

A Clear button appears when any search or filter is active. Clicking it resets the search box, category selection, and price range, showing all active listings again.

Empty states

When no listings match the search or filter, the page displays a helpful message:

  • No search results — "No listings found matching your search."
  • No listings in category — "No listings in this category yet."

These messages help users understand that the marketplace is working correctly, but no listings match their criteria.

Configuring which filters and sorts are available

You control which filters and sort options appear on your storefront from the Search options page:

  1. Go to Sites in the admin panel
  2. Open your site's Home page
  3. In the sidebar, expand Build → Listings and click Search options

From there you can toggle the category filter, enable and bound the price filter, and pick which sort options visitors can use. See Search options for details.

What gets searched

Search and filtering only apply to active listings. Closed and expired listings are never shown in search results or on the browse page.
